Wabi-sabi Cottage

modern cottage restoration, Dorset

Taking cues from its beautiful countryside surroundings, we embarked on restoring and refreshing this pretty cottage both inside and out to create a calm, natural retreat from city living for its owners. The design sought to enhance the building’s inherent character while introducing a sense of quiet refinement and comfort suited to modern living. Natural materials and tactile finishes run throughout the interiors, creating a layered scheme that feels both grounded and serene. Antique pieces sit comfortably alongside contemporary elements, balancing heritage character with modern comfort.

Working closely with skilled artisans allowed us to introduce thoughtful, handcrafted details throughout the home. These include hand-embroidered linen, a woven rush headboard and a hand-finished engineered oak floor with a gently aged patina, each adding texture and individuality to the scheme.

The surrounding landscape is subtly echoed in a curated collection of art commissions across textiles, paper, canvas, ceramics, and stone, bringing a quiet sense of nature indoors.

Sustainability was also an important consideration. Wherever possible, existing elements such as cabinetry and sanitaryware were retained and thoughtfully updated. New cabinet fronts, natural floor finishes, brassware, and carefully considered lighting refresh the spaces while reducing unnecessary waste.

The result is a peaceful countryside cottage that feels both timeless and deeply connected to its setting.
